Chapter 6

Ellie froze as the snuffling grew closer and closer. Now the creature was just the other side of the tent wall, only a few centimetres from her head. She cringed away, remembering stories of wild wolves.

Then she remembered Moonbeam and relaxed. She must have escaped again and come looking for more cornflakes. Ellie just needed to go outside and catch her. Then the noise would stop.

Suddenly, something scratched at the tent wall – something hard, something like a claw. There was no way a pony could make a sound like that. It couldn’t be Moonbeam. It must be a wolf.

Ellie fumbled for her torch. Maybe light would drive the creature away. But in her panic, she knocked the torch over and it tumbled with a loud clang into a tin of hoof oil. Instantly, the snuffling stopped, and Ellie heard something crashing through the undergrowth.

Kate sat bolt upright in her sleeping bag. “What’s happening?” she asked, snapping on her torch.
